
Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates during WW1 in hopes to improve rehabilitation efforts for injured veterans. Pilates developed a collection of precise movements that would emphasize the control and form necessary to aid injured soldiers as they worked to regain their health by strengthening, stretching and stabilizingkey muscle groups.
Mr. Pilates designed more than 500 specific exercises using unique pieces of equipment to develop the body uniformly. The Pilates system is designed to work the body as a whole, co-coordinating the upper and lower muscles of the body using spring resistance and the body’s own weight.
